DURING YOUR VISIT

Treatment Overview

Evaluation

A thorough evaluation is performed on every patient before treatment is performed. We take the time to listen to your symptoms, apply information your general dentist has provided, and perform necessary tests. We use digital radiographs, microscopes, and even 3-dimensional CT scans to further guide us. Utilizing the latest technology and applying advanced training in endodontics allows us to determine the most accurate diagnosis. We then discuss your treatment options to help decide the most appropriate treatment plan.

How long does my visit take?

Appointments are made according to necessary treatment. They range between 30 and 90 minutes. Some appointments may take longer or require follow up visits depending on the complexity of the case and the pathology encountered. We understand that your time is valuable and strive to stay on time and allot each patient the appropriate time for treatment. Some procedures may run a little long due to the complexity of the case, therefore we try to call you ahead of time if we run late to minimize your time spent waiting.

Rubber Dam usage

All root canal treatments are performed using a rubber dam. You may have encountered a rubber dam while having fillings done but this system is usually reserved for endodontics. A rubber dam is a shield placed on the treatment tooth. It creates a barrier that prevents contamination of the tooth from saliva, which contains bacteria, but also prevents the materials which we use from reaching the back of your mouth. It provides protection for you and your tooth.

Comfort during your visit

We all know that the words "root canal" can bring out the worst images in our minds. Having dental pain caused by an endodontic problem can add a lot of stress and anxiety in regards to the root canal procedure itself. We will do our best to listen to all your concerns and perform a pain free procedure to the best of our ability. We offer noise canceling headphones for a more relaxed setting where you can play your favorite music to block out any stressful loud sounds. In addition, nitrous oxide or "laughing gas", is available for those who need additional stress reducing measures.

Sedation

We offer nitrous oxide sedation for patients with severe anxiety. Nitrous oxide (otherwise known as laughing gas) provides a safe and effective sedation for more anxious patients. One of the benefits of nitrous oxide sedation is that we can carefully control its dosage to create a relaxed sensation. Nitrous oxide is not intended to put you to sleep, however many patients feel relaxed enough to fall asleep. It is very safe to use, even in children. Unlike other forms of sedation its effects wear off within 5 minutes, allowing you to drive yourself to and from the office without the need of accompaniment.

Will I need a second appointment?

Most endodontic treatments can be performed in one visit. Some infected cases or retreatments of previous root canals may need a second appointment. During the fist appointment, the root canal system is completely cleaned and an antibacterial medication is placed for 1-2 weeks to further sterilize your tooth. The second visit is used to rinse the canals and place the filling material which completes the root canal treament. The need for one or two visits is determined on a case-by-case basis in order to achieve optimal results.
